What inspired you to pursue a career in speech-language therapy, and what do you find most rewarding about your work?

l always knew I wanted to pursue a career that helped others in any way possible and this career offers just that in a variety of ways. Within the career of speech language pathology, what I find the most rewarding is helping my clients enhance their ability to communicate effectively while increasing their confidence and helping them achieve their own voice that is functional for them.
Can you share a memorable success story from your time working with clients that highlights the impact of speech-language therapy?

A memorable success story I have had was with an articulation client. I worked with him for the entirety of a clinical placement during graduate school where we worked on producing multiple sounds. He grasped the other sounds we were working on fairly quickly, but we worked diligently on producing a specific sound while utilizing various tools. This sound was noticeably difficult for him and negatively impacted his confidence. Towards the end of the placement, he began producing the sound and the smile on his face after each successful trial was priceless. He was so proud of overcoming something that was not easy for him which positively impacted his
confidence and eagerness to learn and continue. I was so proud of him and thoroughly enjoyed seeing his confidence grow. A positive attitude and encouragement goes a long way!
What are your favorite techniques or tools to use during therapy sessions, and why do you find them effective?

My favorite technique and tools to use during therapy is utilizing a play based therapy approach and engaging in communication about what the clinician and/or child is doing to increase exposure to sounds and vocabulary. I believe this allows for the child to become more comfortable with the clinician as well as providing numerous opportunities for imitation, modeling, expanding on utterances to build their vocabulary, and introducing new items that will be worked on during therapy.
What are your hobbies or interests outside of work that help you relax and recharge?

Outside of work, I enjoy taking evening walks to watch the sunset, spending time with family and friends as much as I can, and also playing tennis during some free time. That is how I like to recharge and reset!
