What inspired you to pursue a career in speech-language therapy, and what do you find most rewarding about your work?
I spent ten years teaching English as a Second Language, and during that time, I had the privilege of working with many incredible students. One, in particular, profoundly impacted my career path. He was a deaf student who traveled from the Congo to receive cochlear implants, and I had the opportunity to collaborate with his speech-language pathologist to support his progress. Witnessing his determination, resilience, and the transformative power of communication sparked something in me. That experience awakened a deep desire to help children find their voice. The thing that I find most rewarding about this work is being part of that journey of helping children communicate more confidently and watching their world open up as a result.
Can you share a memorable success story from your time working with clients that highlights the impact of speech-language therapy?
One of my most memorable success stories is working with a child with autism who was initially nonverbal and struggled to engage during the evaluation. Through child-centered play, modeling, ASL, and caregiver education, she began making progress. She went from not responding to her name to achieving 100% success in that goal, engaged in functional play independently, and even started imitating simple gestures like waving hello and goodbye. Watching her grow to actively connecting with others is a testament to the powerful impact of speech-language pathology in building meaningful communication skills
What are your favorite techniques or tools to use during therapy sessions, and why do you find them effective?
I enjoy using play-based therapy with children because it creates a natural, relaxed environment where they feel comfortable and engaged. In this setting, I’m able to follow their lead, build on their strengths, and target speech and language goals in a meaningful and developmentally appropriate way. Play not only fosters genuine interaction but also supports carryover into real-life communication.
What are your hobbies or interests outside of work that help you relax and recharge?
I enjoy family time. My husband and I love to travel, attend plays, and concerts.
